Science Letter: Obstacles to scientific input in global policy

This letter in Science (free access), written by IPCP Board Members and colleagues, highlights obstacles to scientific input into UNEP processes including those on chemicals and waste. The letter describes the difficulties for researchers from public universities to become accredited with UNEP as their institutions do not meet the “non-governmental” criterion for accreditation. As a result, participation of independent experts at UNEA sessions may be hampered. UNEP is aware of this problem and has provided an alternative entry point via other UNEP processes such as the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions. IPCP calls for better communication of this entry point to safeguard the contribution of independent experts.
