Our periodic newsletters provide a brief summary of key IPCP efforts that the board has been focusing on.
Horizon Scanning Paper
A recent paper entitled “Aligning horizon scanning approaches with differing needs and topics at the Science–Policy Interface on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution” led by IPCP members was written to provide guidance on aligning horizon scanning approaches with differing objectives, audiences, and thematic scopes surrounding the newly established Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution (ISP-CWP). We structured this guidance around three core dimensions: the topics addressed (“what”), the actors involved (“who”), and the methods applied (“how”). Drawing on existing horizon scanning efforts and foresight practices, we outline inclusive and transparent approaches suitable for prospective assessments across diverse contexts. Emphasis is placed on correcting epistemic asymmetries, integrating local and indigenous knowledge, and ensuring legitimacy for global governance processes. Strategically designed horizon scanning can support anticipatory policy, promote equity, and help steer collective action toward a livable planet for all.
IPCP Working Groups
Thanks to the support of the IPCP members, the IPCP has several active working groups. Based on the input submitted by a number of members the IPCP is initiating Chemical Mixtures working group which aims to establish a global network of collaborators concerned that exposure to multiple chemicals in combination can result in adverse impacts on human health and the environment, even when individual substances are present at levels deemed safe. The the objective of of this group is advancing assessment methodologies and supporting the development of a regulatory framework for chemical mixtures.
IPCP members interested in joining any of the working groups should reach out to WorkingGroups@ipcp.ch.
IPCP Delegation to Attend the Global Framework on Chemicals First International Conference
The Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) will be holding its first International Conference on 16-20 November, 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland. The GFC is a multi-stakeholder organization that brings together representatives from governments, the private sector, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations, youth and, last but not least, academia. The GFC is the successor to SAICM (Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management). The conference will discuss the GFC’s five strategic objectives and 28 targets that were agreed upon in September 2023 (the Bonn Declaration), and it will discuss the “Emerging Policy Issues” and “Issues of Concern” identified under SAICM.
The IPCP delegation will attend the GFC meeting to participate in the discussions and make interventions as part of the academic sector. There is limited room for additional IPCP members interested in attending as part of the IPCP delegation. Please note that the IPCP delegation members need to secure their own funding.
